Website Do's and Don'ts The following suggestions have been compiled to help you in the development of a simple, solid, clean website that customers will be comfortable browsing and want to return to. Remember: The most important rule in web design is consistency, not only between your brick-and-mortar and internet storefronts, but also among the pages within your site. Take your time and put serious thought into what will be presented online.
Asking Yourself the Right Quesitons Answer the following questions with your plan: What is the purpose of your site? How will you measure the site's success? How often do you want customers to return? How will you get them to come back? Who will follow up on emails, feedback and sales? How will you promote your site?
Securing the Right Domain Name Choosing a name that works is important, but not as crucial as choosing a REAL name. In other words, spend the $20 and reserve a real domain name, not something like "www.myprovider.com/community/mystore.net" that people will never remember. Keep your name simple. Can you say Yahoo? eBay? Monster?
Keeping it Simple Make your site fast loading and easy to navigate. The home page should load in less than 10 seconds and include all of the essential information. Place your navigation bar in the same place on every page. Let the customer always know where they are at and how to get back home.
Choosing the Right Words Avoid self-proclaimed declarations like "We're the best! Incredible! and Amazing!" Rather, answer the Five Questions of Advertising: Who, What, Where, When, and Why about your products & services. Include a responsible pitch that creates the demand or reason why people must have what you're offering.
Navigating Your Site Avoid frames (use tables when possible). Buttons should look clickable. Stay away from dark backgrounds. Don't underline text unless it is a link. Be sure your low-res images are properly sized to avoid pixelization. If the development of a page is not complete, do not go live with a construction message. Simply wait until it is ready and has been tested. These are simple tips that can give your site a professional look.
Learn From the Success of Others Do your homework. The best way to learn is from those who are successful. Start big with Apple, Disney and Coca-Cola while working your way through your competitor's sites. Take note of what you like and dislike (features, colors, layouts, etc.). You'll need to convey these values to your developer later.
Vendor Resources For good quality instrument pictures and line art, you should visit the websites of our vendors (Conn-Selmer, Jupiter, Gemeinhardt), as they have lots of pictures of their products. If you're looking for some additional pointers on website design, download our Web Design PDF.
The Right Tools Veritas-Online was developed using Adobe Illustrator, Photoshop, Acrobat and Dreamweaver software (www.adobe.com). We proudly use Apple Macintosh computers to maintain our site & manage our marketing tasks and can't say enough about their simplicity, reliability and dependability.
